Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Entire range, B-g’’. Chant (App. 3) introduces “regina caeli” (T) and “ora,” the first word of the fourth textual phrase, with breves and semibreves; the initial pitches of the descending interval of a fifth associated with “ora” are stated simultaneously in B and C at the interval of a 10th (c’ and e’’, respectively) followed by T (g’) and A (c’’) separated in time by a minum. A full-voice texture with independent voices and overlapping phrases prevails. In contrast to the brief “alleluia” segments (4-6 mm.) that conclude the first three textual phrases, the final “alleluia” consists of 16 measures (mm. 32-49). A rhythmic motive of three minums and a semibreve, derived from initial statements of B and C (“regina cae-li”), repeatedly occurs in all “alleluia” sections. Except for melismas coupled with “caeli,” “laetare” and “alleluias” (e.g., C, mm. 26-8, and C & A, mm. 45-8), a syllabic style prevails. Final, C.
