Ave regina coelorum

Polyphonic ensemble SATBX

D-C1; A-C3; T-C4; Q-C4; B-F4. Chant (App. 2) is relegated to Q as a continuous cantus firmus in semibreves; chant influences initial pitches for some textual phrases (e.g. “ex qua mundo,” “gaude,” “super omnes” and “vale”). Contrasting motivic material within an imitative, contrapuntal texture delineates the textual phrases. The Pre-Tridentine text set in declamatory style concludes with an “alleluia” segment (mm. 63-84) structured upon a cantus firmus (Q) borrowed from the final “alleluia” of the plainchant associated with Regina caeli (App. 3); the “alleluia” segment comprises 22 mm (a repeated 9-measure phrase with a four-measure coda), that constitutes a fourth of the entire setting. Final F, B♭ signature.

Ave, regina caelorum,
Ave, domina angelorum:
Salve, radix, salve, porta,
Ex qua mundo lux est orta:

Gaude, virgo gloriosa,
Super omnes speciosa,
Vale, o valde decora,
Et pro nobis Christum exora.
