Biographie

"Joan de Ghianes" is the first member of Ferdinand of Aragon's court chapel recorded on a list of cloths given to the "21 singers of the chapel of the lord king", drawn up in Naples in October 1480 (Atlas 1979, p. 46-47 and 93; D'Agostino 2007, p. 264; list first and fully published and commented by Van der Straeten 1888, IV, p. 27-31).
His name has not been found anywhere else by musicologists. G. D'Agostino suggested to identify him with "a certain 'Johan de Guares', servant of the king's treasurer, in charge of many payments to the musicians" (D'Agostino 2007, p. 264, n.18). This hypothesis seems convincing. The fact that he was the first named of this 1480 list, and the only one to be given four different kinds of cloths, including two silk cloths, indeed shows that he was probably not a simple musician. But the lack of the title "messer" (provided for other persons in the list, probably all priests) makes it either unlikely that he was a high-ranking prelate at the head of the chapel, as was customary in most court chapels (Fiala PCR).

Hypothetical identifications
A. Atlas (1979, p. 47) suggested to identify him with a "'Domino Ghineto' (or Ghinet) active in Milan, but there is no valid reason for an identification with this Milanese singer who has since been clearly identified as a Guinetus Morelli, from Avignon (see his biography). R. Wegman (BSCE, p. 18) suggested to identify him with the singer called "Johannes Joannis" in the payment lists of the papal chapel. There is again no compelling argument for this hypothesis, whereas this "Johannes Joannis" might rather be identified to Jean Johanneaux (Fiala PCR).
