Biographie

Three motets and four chansons by him were published in collections printed in Antwerp and Leuven between 1544 and 1555 (art. "Larchier [Larcier], Jean [Johannes]" in GMO [F. Dobbins]).
F. Dobbins (idid.) tentatively suggested that "he may be the same man as the Jean Larcher or ‘Jean Achez’ who was listed as a singer in the Ste Chapelle in Paris in 1521, and who later became chaplain to King Henri II between 1547 and 1550". The identification with the singer of the Sainte-Chapelle in 1521, who was never named Larcher, seems unlikely (see his biography). The Jean Larcher who served the French court is probably yet another person. He was most probably not a musician but a court ecclesiastic mostly attached to the King's oratory. I. Handy documented his carreer from 1548 to 1584 without finding a hint at musical capacities (Handy 2008, p. 214, 235, 473, 501, 573 ; see, p. 501 : "28 avril 1548 : Jehan Larcher, prêtre, chapelain de la Chapelle du Château du « Plessiz Bourré près d'Angers »" and, p. 235 : "Jehan Larcher est enfin cité parmi les chapelains de l'Oratoire en 1584 (quartier d'avril, gages de 80 écus").
