Susanne un jour, d’amour solicitée
Par deux veillards, convoitans sa beauté,
Fut en son coeur triste et desconfortée,
Voiant l’effort fait a sa chasteté.
Elle leur dit, si par desloiauté
De ce corps mien vous avez jouissance
C’est fait de moi, si je fai resistance
Vous me serez mourir en deshonneur.
Mais j’aime mieux perir par innocence,
Que d’offenser par peché le Seigneur.

Susanna one day, solicited for love
By two old men lusting for her beauty
Was sad at heart and sore discouraged,
Seeing their attack upon her chastity,
She said to them, ‘If by perfidy
You take your pleasure of my body
That is the end of me; but if I resist,
You will cause me to die in dishonour.
But I prefer to perish in innocence
Than to sin and give my God offence’.
