He Dieu qu’a merité,
Le peuple saint, qu’on soit tant irrité?
Parmi les feux voir l’Eglise sanglante?
A l’eau, mes bons amis,

TRADUCTION :
Fire, fire! I see France burning,
The fire has set itself against Charity
Alas, not so, it is burning Truth,
For Charity, you see, is not aflame at all.
Water, water! the flames are clear to see
[Directed] against the Temple. Dear God, why have we deserved this,
Thy holy people, that there should be such rage?
[That]amid the flames we see the Church all bleeding.
Water, water, water, my dear friends,
It is the enemy who has set it on fire.
For God’s sake, come, faith is wellnigh extinguished:
Dead is peace, and War is all ablaze.
Impiety, injustice have made a vow
To burn up everything, even the holy land.
