Frere Jehan fust ung jour surprins,
Avec une garse couché,
Dont fut en chapitre reprins
et a ung pillier attaché,
Puis Dieu scait comment esmouché,
Criant tousjours : « frere, tout beau !
Si pour chascun forfaict nouveau
Vous me vouliez ainsi housser,
Je puis bien dire adieu ma peau,
Car je ne m’en scaurois passer. »
