Polyphonic ensemble STX

S-C1; T-C2; Ct-F4. Chant (App. 4) cast as breves and semibreves, introduces textual phrases within an imitative texture (e.g., “salve regina,” mm. 1-15 and “Eya ergo,” mm. 133-9) and emphasizes specific words (e.g., “Et Jesum, T, mm. 175-9; “nobis,” T and S, mm. 196-201; and “virgo,” S, mm. 255-8), and appears as a cantus firmus in verses 7, “O clemens” and 8, “O pia” (mm. 218-41). Passages in parallel tenths (S/Ct, mm. 83-7 and S/Ct, mm. 150-5) and thirds (S/T, mm. 156-7), a sequential segment (C/Ct, mm. 235-42), and double-leading tone cadences (mm. 28-30 and 49-50) suggest a work by a late 15th-century Franco-Flemish composer. Contrasting triple mensuration distinguishes “valle,” conclusion of verse 4 (mm. 126-33), “benedictum…tui” (mm. 180-95), “O clemens,” verse 7 (mm 218-25) and “virgo Maria,” conclusion of verse 9, (mm. 255-68). A reduction of voices (S and Ct) for the three acclamations may be unique to this antiphon. The word “mater” is omitted from verse 1. Ct is textless from dul[cedo] to verse 7 (mm. 33-218); S without text from verse 4-7 (mm. 73-218). Final d.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
