Scores

Polyphonic ensemble SATXX

C-G2; Sx-G2?; A-C2; T-C3; Q-C3. B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, G-g’’. “Salve” intonation (C). Chant (App. 4) also introduces “regina” (T, A, C, B) to permeate the imitative texture (mm. 1-5); plainsong associated with “Et Jesum benedictum” cast as semibreves (B) supports a full voice contrapuntal texture. Imitation defines segments concurrent with “regina” (mm. 1-5), “in hac lachrimarum” (mm. 24-6) and “illos tuos” (mm. 36-40). Contrasting triple mensuration coupled with homorhythmic texture initiates verse 5 (“Eia…nostra,” mm. 31-7), the centerpiece of the antiphon. A variety of voice groupings provide contrast in this well crafted antiphon. Descending voice lines traversing E-flat and c tonal areas depict “in hac lachrimarum valle”). Final g, b♭ signature; several e-flats included in MS.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
