[1] Vita dulcedo

Polyphonic ensemble SSATB

[C I]-C1; [C II]-C1; [A]-C3; [T]-C4; [B]-F4. Alternatim setting. Brief chant (App. 4) borrowings in B emphasize “in hac lachrimarum valle” (mm. 34-7) and “Et Jesum” (mm. 42-3). An imitative, polyphonic texture characterizes partes 1 and 2; except for imitation of initial pitches (C I, A, C II), five independent voices define pars 4 (9 mm.). On the other hand, a homorhythmic texture with independent voices sets apart a significant portion of pars 3 (“fructum…ostende,” mm. 47-59). As a point of departure, B of pars 1 begins with a descending 5-note motive first stated in C I (a’-d’, mm. 1-2) and continues with a 5-note extention (a-G) accompanied by two statements of “vita dulcedo” (mm. 3-6). There follows a motive (B: d, A, d, G, A, d, A, mm. 7-9) that is restated in mm. 12-14 with different musical material in the four upper voices. Final d; b-flats included in MS. Partes 1 and 4 conclude on the dominant, A.

[2] Ad te suspiramus

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
