[1] Salve regina/Vita dulcedo

Polyphonic ensemble STX

[C]-C1; T-C4; [Ct]-F3. “Salve” intonation (C). Paraphrased chant (App. 4) supported by textless (instrumental?) T and Ct characterizes a major portion of the antiphon; for “O clemens,” pars 8, and “O pia,” pars 9, chant serves as a cantus firmus in long note values, respectively, in T and Ct. A texted duo (C/Ct), “nobis post hoc exsilium” (6.p.) includes imitative passages (mm. 135-8 and 143-6). Deviating from the nine-verse structure, the antiphon includes verses 1 and 2 in pars 1 and verse 3 and a considerable segment of verse 4 (“ad te…flentes”) in pars 2. Most unusual are the independent partes devoted to “in hoc lacrimarum valle,” the conclusion of verse 4, “nobis post hoc exsilium” and “ostende,” the second half of verse 6. Triple mensuration defines partes 1-3, 6, 8 and 9, duple mensuration, pars 4, 5, 7, and 10. Final d; a (2.p., 6.p., 8.p.).

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
