[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble STX

[C]-C2; [Ct]-C4; T-F4. Entire range, A-a’. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases are differentiated through contrasting voice groups and mensuration. Duos constitute more than two-thirds of the antiphon including verses 1 (C/Ct, mm. 1-20), 2 (Ct/T, mm. 20-31), 5 (C/Ct, 54-75), 6 (C/Ct, mm. 76-94), and three verses of trope Virgo mater[1] (C/Ct) that, respectfully, precede the three acclamations, verses 7-9. A polyphonic texture of equal independent voices characterizes the duo and trio sections. Triple mensuration defines the first sections comprised of verses 1-4, the third trope verse, “Funde preces,” and the final acclamation, “O dulcis Maria, salve”; alternating mensurations distinguish inner sections from verse 5, “Eya ergo,” through verse 8, “O pia.” Final d; a (verse 7), C (verses 5 & 8).

1. Virgo mater ecclesiae, / Virgin mother of the church
aeterna porta gloriae, / eternal gate to glory,
esto nobis refugium / be a refuge for us
apud Patrem et Filium. / before the Father and the Son,

O clemens! / O gentle one;

Virgo clemens, virgo pia, / Gentle virgin, virgin holy,
virgo dulcis, O Maria, / O sweet virgin Mary,
exaudi preces omnium / hear the prayers of all
ad te pie clamantium. / Who make their dutiful cry to you,

O pia! / O loving one;

Funde preces tuo nato / Pour out your prayers to your Son,
crucifixo, vulnerato, / crucified, wounded,
et pro nobis flagellato / and scourged for our sake,
spinis puncto, felle potato, / pierced with thorns, given gall to drink.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
