[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble STXX

[C]-G2; Ct I-C3; T-C4; Ct II-C4. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases are distinguished through contrast of mensuration and voice groups, and the inclusion of a borrowed secular melody. Hilf und gib rat,[1] a German Lied serves as a cantus firmus (T) primarily cast in breves and semibreves and surrounded by independent voices in four-voice sections (“vita dulcedo,” mm. 21-33; verse 3, mm. 41-57; “in hac…valle,” mm. 70-9; and 3.p.). Duos constitute two-fifths of the motet: C/Ct I, verse 1, mm. 1-21; Ct I/Ct II, “et spes nostra,” mm. 33-41; C/Ct II, “gementes et flentes,” mm. 63-9; and 2.p. Triple mensuration characterizes 1.p. and duple the remaining two partes. The word “mater” in verse 1 is omitted. Text is relegated to C throughout antiphon; text incipits introduce other voices. The text of the hymn Gaude rosa speciosa has been underlayed in the C of this motet at a later date. Final g; b♭ signature in Ct I, T, and Ct II of 2.p., editorial b♭ required in pars 1 and C of pars 2.

1. Initial pitches of the Lied appear in measures 9 and 10 (T) of the Quodlibet,
In feuers hitz, in the Glogauer Liederbuch, No. 66 in EDM 4.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
