Polyphonic ensemble STXX

[C]-G2; CtI-C3; T-C4; CtII-F3. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases are differentiated through contrast of duos and full-voice sections, texture, mensuration and the presence of a cantus firmus. The T of Dufay’s rondeau, Le serviteur hault guerdonné[1] serves as a cantus firmus (T) in the four-voice sections (verse 3, mm. 18-36; portions of verse 4, mm. 37-42, conclusion of verse 4 and entirety of verse 5, mm. 47-68), but also provides commentary upon text Salve regina. With rhythmic gestures comparable to surrounding voices the A section of Dufay’s T supports verse 3 and beginning of verse 4 (mm. 28-41), the B section “in hac…valle” of verse 4 and verse 5 (mm. 48-68); the A and initial pitches of B section of Dufay’s T underscore the three acclamations (3.p., 4.p., 5.p.). Duos (C/C I) introduce partes 1 and 2 constituting half of the antiphon. In contrast with adjacent contrapuntal texture, a corona caps each pitch of “O clemens” (3.p.) and “O pia” (4.p.) within a homophonic texture. Triple mensuration defines pars 1 and duple mensuration the remaining four partes. The word “mater” is omitted in verse 1. Text is supplied for C; incipits preface other voices. Final g (5.p.), d (1.p., 2.p., 3.p., 4.p.).
