[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

[C]-C2; [A]-C4; [T]-C4; [B]-F4. Entire range, F-b♭’. Considerable overlapping of voices due to the low tessitura of C and similar ranges of A and T. Chant (App. 4) introduces partes 1 (“salve regina” mm. 1-5), 3 (“eya ergo” mm. 76-9) & 4 (“O clemens” mm. 138-42), and highlights specific words (“nobis post” mm. 123-7 and “O dulcis” mm. 152-7) cast as semibreves that permeate the imitative, polyphonic texture. Paraphrased plainsong prevails in C of the first two partes and T of partes 3 & 4. Structural features differ from most Salve regina settings; partes 1, 2 & 3 each include two textual verses whereas pars 4 is devoted to the three acclamations (verses 7-9). Pars 3 consists of two independent sections, the first concluding with “Et Jesum,” a phrase normally treated as the beginning of verse 6. Invertible counterpoint based in chant (A/C and T/B, mm. 109-15) introduces section 2, “benedictum…ostende,” followed by an imitative segment associated with “fructum” (C, A, T, B, mm. 114-19). Final d, no signature; except for a few b-flats included in MS, editorial accidentals required.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
