[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

S-C1; A-C3; T-C3; B-F3. Chant is limited to a paraphrased “salve” motto that permeates the imitative texture (T, S, B, S, mm. 1-10) and a statement of “Eia ergo” (3.p., T). Comprising four partes this Salve regina at first glance suggests an alternatim setting; except for pars 3 that contains verse 5, the others partes include multiple verses: 1.p., verses 1 and 2; 2.p., verses 3 and 4; 4.p., verses 6, 7, 8, and 9. Textual phrases and words are differentiated through contrasting texture, rhythmic gestures, and silence before and after verses 7 and 8. An imitative, contrapuntal texture defines pars 1, whereas the other three partes primarily display homophony. The word “mater” is omitted in verse 1, but added in verse 9 (“O dulcis virgo mater Maria”). Final g, b♭ signature (S and T), b♭ and e♭ signature (A and B).

[2] Ad te clamamus

[3] Eia ergo

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
