[1] Vita dulcedo,

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

S-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Alternatim setting. Chant (App. 4) introduces partes 1, 2, and 4, and emphasizes specific words (e.g., “fructum,” (S, A, T, mm. 63-5 and “nobis,” S, A, B, mm. 70-4). The “vita” motto (S, T, mm. 1-4) in semibreves and the initial plainsong pitches associated with “O pia” (d’’-L, c’’-B, d’’-L) in S are clearly differentiated within the predominantly imitative, contrapuntal texture. Though lacking the “Et Jesum” motive, homophony prevails along with presence of breves in all voices (mm. 51-4). A motive[1] (d, e, g, f, g) derived from chant coinciding with “et spes” first appears in B with text “vita” (mm. 3-4) followed by statements of “et spes” in B and S (mm. 13-6) and “gementes” (S, mm. 33-4). Limited concern for text underlay. Final g; b♭ signature.

1. See SR366 wherein an identical motive is associated with “gementes” (D, S, T, B) in pars 2 (mm. 26-33).

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
