[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

[D]-G2; [A]-C1; [T]-C3; [B]-F3. High clefs. Entire range, G-f’’. No evidence of chant. Tenor in semibreves and breves associated with three acclamations (verses 7-9, mm. 49-57) conveys the attributes of a borrowed melody. Cadences articulate verses or half verses (verses 4, 5 & 6) with brief imitative overlap of subsequent verse (e.g., verses 2, 3, 4 & 7) providing a sense of continuity; to emphasize the significance of verse 5, the centerpiece of the antiphon, a homorhythmic texture introduces the verse. Except for short imitative introductions to verses 3, 4 & 7, half verses “illos tuos… (mm. 27-8) and “nobis post…” (mm. 43-4), a homorhythmic style with voice independence and full-voice texture prevails. Syllabic text setting defines the antiphon. Final F, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
