[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

[D]-G2; [A]-C2; [T]-C3; [B]-F4. High clefs. Entire range, G-f’’. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases are characterized through identical material and contrasting rhythmic gestures. To complement the plainsong, verses 1, “salve…;” and 2, “vita…,” share identical music.[1] Homophonic and homorhythmic styles define the antiphon. Verses 1-3, 6 & 9 are comprised of semibreves and minums whereas verses 4 & 5 favor minums and semiminums; verses 7 & 8 are each cast in three breves. A primarily syllabic text setting whether associated with breves or minums defines the antiphon. Final g, b♭ signature; several e-flats included in C95 but editorial e-flats required.[2]

1. Salve regina settings by Arcadelt, SR021, Beausseron, SR037, Josquin, SR127, Misonne, SR172, Palestrina, SR195, Praetorius, SR216, Richafort, SR230, Sermisy, SR236, and anonymous settings SR339, SR358, SR376, SR382, SR393, SR395 and SR476 follow the same procedure.

2. SR349 and SR358 have several similarities: same music for first two verses; formal structure; melodic and harmonic material particularly associated with “salve/vita” (mm. 1-7), and beginning of 2.p.; upper 3 voices (D, A, T) present verse 3, “ad te clamamus…”; homophonic and homorhymic styles; breves for verses 7 & 8; and concluding cadential material.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
