[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble STB

[D]-C2; T-C4; B-F3. Chant (App. 4) assigned to D as a cantus firmus and primarily cast as breves, is supported by two equal, textless (instrumental?) voices that are constructed of minums and semiminums. Set apart in homorhythmic style, the “Et Jesum” motive in D carries a corona over pitches in each voice. The “salve/vita” motto is separated from the rest of the text of the respective verses by two breves of silence; singular periods of silence (1-4 breves) also appear in pars 4, 5, and 9. The words “mater” in verse 1 and “virgo” in verse 9 are omitted. Text is presented as an incipit or may be entirely omitted in T and B; to be sure, text underlay in D complements that of the plainsong. Final d (1.p., 3.p., 8.p., 9.p.); g (2.p., 4.p., 5.p., 6.p.); a (7.p.). Several b-flats appear in the MS; however, editorial b-flats are necessary.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
