Chant (App. 4)[1] appears as motto, paraphrase and cantus firmus. “Vita” (“salve”) motto (longa and breves, T and S) introduces 1.p. within paired imitation of which the supporting motive (B and A), a descending stepwise motive encompassing an octave, recurs in mm. 32-49.[2] Paraphrase chant associated with “dulcedo” and “salve” continue within an imitative texture. Plainsong also permeates the imitative, contrapuntal fabric of partes 2 and 3. The plainsong concurrent with “in hac lacrimarum valle” of pars 2 resides in S (mm. 33-49) supported by a descending stepwise motive (see m. 1, B) comprised of minums that spans an octave (a-A: Ct, 3 statements; B, 1 statement), a10th (a-F: Ct and B, 1 statement each) and a 12th (a-D: B, 2 statements) to depict the text. An unusual layered texture defines pars 4 wherein a segmented cantus firmus (S) consists of breves separated by breve rests; the two lower voices (T II and B) in a hocket technique supplies a supporting voice in breves and longae. On the other hand, A and T I comprise rapid rhythmic gestures primarily in minums and semiminums. That text underlay is of little concern is most evident in pars 4. Final d (1.p., 2.p., 3.p.), a (4.p.).

1. The source for the chant is most likely Cambrai, Médiathèque Municipale, XVI C 4 (ca. 1508-18), ff. 227v-8, or an antiphonary with a similar disposition of the plainsong.

2. This motive, stated 22 times as an ostinato, is the only material in the Bassus of SR332.
