C I-C1; C II-C1; A-C3; T I-C4; T II-C4; B-F4. C voices are equal. Entire range, E-e’’. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases are defined through contrast of voice groupings, cadential treatment and mensuration. Verse 1, “salve…misericordiae,” scored for full-voice texture (mm. 1-7), is followed by contrasting voice groups for verse 2, “vita…salve”: “vita dulcedo,” C I, C II, A, T II, mm. 8-9; “et spes nostra salve,” A, T I, T II, B, mm. 9-11. Descending vocal lines depict “in hac lachrimarum valle” (mm. 24-7). Triple mensuration, full-voice texture and homorhythm define “nobis…ostende” (mm. 51-8). Descending intervals (mm. 63-6) emphasize the final acclamation, “O dulcis…” (e’’-a’, C I; d’’-g♯’, C II; and e’-g♯, T II). Third-related chords including cross relationships underscore specific passages (e.g., “ad te supiramus,” mm. 18-9, G-E with g/g♯). Final d; b-flats included in MS.

Description

D-Mbs Mus.ms. 8 (dated 1611) opens with an unattributed cycle of the four Marian antiphons (SR326, AR121, AC169, & RC270), all for 6 vv with similar style characteristics, most likely by Giacomo Perlazio (d 1612). The Veronese priest was Vizekapellmeister at the Bavarian court chapel (1609-12) but had been associated with the Munich chapel since 1592. He is reported to have assembled a bound book “mit Magnificat und andern Kirchengesang.” In addition to the four antiphons, D-Mbs Mus.ms. 8 also includes eight Magnificats and 4 additional pieces, all anonymous.
