Scores

Polyphonic ensemble SAATB

C-G2; A-C2; T-C4; A-C4; B-F4. Entire range, G-f’’. An inversion of the initial pitches of the “salve” motto (d, e♭, d or a, b♭, a) in semibreves (Q, T, B, C) and a paraphrased “salve” motto (App. 4) permeate the imitative texture (mm. 1-8). The “vita” motto (T & B) and initial pitches of plainsong associated with “et spes nostra” of verse 2 introduce the respective textual phrases within a dense texture with rhythmic gestures of minums, semiminums and fusae (mm. 13-31). Verse 5 continues with similar rhythmic and motivic gestures but with reduced number of voices: “Eia ergo advocata,” 2 voices, and “illos…converte,” 3 voices. Following silence (semibreve), the words “et Jesum” are cast as semibreves and a breve; the remainder of verse 6, “benedictum…ostende,” in a homorhythmic texture of independent voices, syllabically accompanies the text. An ascending triadic sequential pattern involving a motive in canon between A & B and the harmonic foundation (E♭, g, B♭) defines the three acclamations (vs. 7, 8 & 9). The motive of three descending pitches (semibreves) forms a half step followed by an interval of a 5th (e♭, d, g); the initial pitch of the three motivic statements mirror the basic harmonies. Surrounding melodic/rhythmic gestures complement the canonic voices. Final g, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
