Scores

Polyphonic ensemble SSATBXXX

Two contrasting choirs. Chr. I: D I-??; A-C3; T-C4; B-4. Range, D-e’’. Chr. II: D II-C1; Sp-C3; Q-C4; O-F4. Range, A-e’’. Though not included in MS, the “Salve” intonation most likely precedes the initial T statement that quotes the first three chant pitches associated with “regina.” Additional brief references to chant (App. 4) concur with “ad te clamamus” (mm. 16-7) and “illos” (mm. 44-5). Textual phrases are differentiated through antiphonal treatment, texture and rhythmic gestures. Two textual phrases are accompanied by voices from both choirs: “regina mater” (Chr. I, D I & Q; Chr. II, D II, mm. 1-5) and “ad te clamamus…Evae” (Chr. I, D I & A; Chr. II, D II & Sp, mm. 16-22). Full voice texture with imitation of melodic/rhythmic gestures unique to each choir or disposed throughout 8 voices prevails: “regina mater, mm. 5-8; “vita…salve,” mm. 10-16; “gementes et flentes, 25-9; “eya ergo,” mm. 33-6; “illos tuos misericordes,” 43-50; “Et Jesum,” mm. 54-6; “nobis post hoc exilium ostende,” mm. 61-3; and “O dulcis virgo Maria,” mm. 74-8. Primarily cast in semibreves, “O clemens” and “O pia” contrast with surrounding material in this well crafted antiphon. Final d, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
