[1] Vita dulcedo

Polyphonic ensemble STTBX

[C]-G2; Ct-C2; T [I]-C3; T [II]-C4; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, G-f’’. Alternatim setting. The anonymous composer has uniquely included two chant motives in pars 1, the “vita” (“salve”) motto (see verses 1 and 2 of Salve regina) and “nobis” motive (see verse 6). Whereas the “nobis” motive is invariably notated in semibreves, the “vita” motto contrasts as either a dotted-semibreve or semibreve followed by two semiminums two minums.

“Vita” T II, m. 1, 7, 13; Ct, m. 4; B, m. 8; T I, m. 14.
“nobis” C, m. 1, 20, 26; Ct, m. 7, 19; B, m. 17, 22; T II, m. 23.

Additionally, chant (App. 4) permeates the imitative, contrapuntal texture with “Et Jesum” (3. p.), “O pia” (4. p.) and specific phrases or words (e.g., “in hac lachrimarum,” mm. 44-58, “fructum,” mm. 65-9 and “nobis,” mm. 71-80). The four partes demonstrate a remarkable similarity in length: 29, 29, 28 and 24 measures, respectively.
Finale g, e-flats included in text but editorial e-flats are required.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
