[1] Vita dulcedo

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

[S]-G2; [A]-C2; [T]-C3; [B]-F3. High clefs. Entire range, G-g’’. Alternatim setting. Paraphrased chant (App. 4) introduces “vita” (“salve”) motto in S, but “vita” motto also appears in long note values (T) of pars 1; initial pitches of chant associated with “ad te suspiramus” permeate the imitative texture of pars 2 and the concluding phrase “in hac lachrimarum valle” is presented in imitation between B and T. The “Et Jesum” motive appears in T within a homorhythmic texture set apart in breves and semibreves whereas chant serves as a cantus firmus (S) supported by a contrapuntal texture in pars 4. Two partes (1.p. and 4.p.) of equal length (10 mm.) create a degree of structural symmetry for the setting. Declamatory text setting prevails. Final g (1.p., 2.p., 3.p.), d (4.p.); b♭ signature with several e-flats in the MS.

[2] Ad te suspiramus

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
