Polyphonic ensemble SSATTB

[S I]-G2; [S II]-G2; [A]-C2; [T I]-C3; [T II]-C3; [B]-F3. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-g’’. “Salve” motto, primarily in semibreves, appears within an imitative fabric (A, mm.1-3; T II, mm. 1-2; B, mm. 2-5; T I, mm. 4-7). A layered texture of two equal S voices, supported by two to four lower voices, yields considerable variety of voice combinations in the antiphon; only two segments (“advocata nostra,” mm. 32-4 and “O dulcis virgo Maria,” mm. 55-60) are for full choir. Pitch inflection (d-e♭) in lowest voice coupled with harmonic progression (d-c) and similar voice movement provides another unifying feature: “gementes,” (A, T I, T II, B) mm. 25-6; “et flentes,” (S I, S II, A, T I); “et Jesum,” 40-1 (A, T I, T II, B); and “O pia,” mm. 53-5 (S I, T I, T II, B). Declamatory text setting in syllabic style prevails. Final g, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
