Polyphonic ensemble SATBXX

C-C1; Sx-C1; A-C3; Q-C4; T-F3; B-F4. As anticipatory statements of chant motives and the subject of a canon, chant (App. 4) significantly influences the structure of Zarlino’s Salve regina. Anticipatory statements of “salve” motto and motives associated with “eia ergo” and “Et Jesum” permeate the imitative texture. Paraphrased chant (e.g., “ad te clamamus) as well as cantus firmus treatment (e.g., “gementes et flentes,” “ in hac lacrymarum valle” and the three acclamations, verses 7-8) define canon at the upper octave (Sx and T) at distance of six breves (1.p.), canon at the lower octave (Sx and T) after three breves (2.p.), and canon at the lower octave, Sx and T, at the distance of four breves (3.p.). The tripartite structure is emphasized with a contrasting four-voice setting of verse 5, the centerpiece of the antiphon. The word “mater” is omitted in verse 1. Declamatory text setting primarily in syllabic style characterizes the motet. Final d, several b-flats appear in the source but editorial b-flats are necessary.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
