Tb-G2; M-C2; Ct-C4; T-C4; B-F4. Entire range, G-g’’. No evidence of chant. Except for brief imitative entries (pitch and/or rhythm) that introduce specific textual phrases (e.g., “salve regina,” mm. 1-6; “benedictum,” mm. 66-8; “exaudi,” mm. 108-9; and “Dele culpas,” mm. 126-7), a contrapuntal texture comprised of supple rhythmic gestures prevails. Textual phrases and verses are differentiated through contrast of two and three-voice groupings with full-voice sections, duple and triple mensurations and tonal goals.

Like other Salve regina settings by 15th-century English composers, this antiphon includes the trope Virgo mater;[1] however, Wylkynson substitutes verse 5, “Dele culpas” for the usual verse 3, Funde preces,” of the trope. Final, see above; b♭ signature (B), inconsistent use (Tr, Ct, B), omitted (M).

Virgo mater ecclesiae, / Virgin mother of the church
aeterna porta gloriae, / eternal gate to glory,
esto nobis refugium / be a refuge for us
apud Patrem et Filium. / before the Father and the Son,

O clemens! / O gentle one;

Virgo clemens, virgo pia, / Gentle virgin, virgin holy,
virgo dulcis, O Maria, / O sweet virgin Mary,
exaudi preces omnium / hear the prayers of all
ad te pie clamantium. / Who make their dutiful cry to you,

O pia! / O loving one;

Funde preces tuo nato / Pour out your prayers to your Son,
crucifixo, vulnerato, / crucified, wounded,
et pro nobis flagellato / and scourged for our sake,
spinis puncto, felle potato, / pierced with thorns, given gall to drink.

O dulcis Maria, salve. / O sweet Mary, hail!
