Scores

Polyphonic ensemble SATTB

S-C1; A-C3; T I-C4; T II-C4; B-F4. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases are clearly delineated within a symmetrical design. Surrounded by 21-measure segments, verse 5 as the centerpiece consists of twelve measures of which the initial phrase, “eja ergo advocata nostra” is stated twice (3 plus 3 mm.; mm. 23-9); the remainder of verse 5, “illos…converte” comprises six measures. The final words (“exilium ostende”) of verse 6 entail antiphonal treatment (A, T I, T II and S, A, B); a varied statement of verse 9, “O dulcis virgo Maria,” (3 plus 3 mm.) concludes the antiphon. Declamatory text setting complements homophonic texture. Final e.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

Vita, dulcedo et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus exsules filii Hevae.

Ad te suspiramus gementes et flentes in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra, illos tuos misericordes oculos ad nos converte.

Et Jesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui, nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
