Chant (App. 4) is limited to initial pitches of textual phrases “et spes nostra” (verse 2), “ad te clamamus” (verse 2, B only), “ad te suspiramus” (verse 4), “gementes” (verse 4), “Et Jesum” (verse 6, B only) and “nobis” (verse 6, T I only). Contrasting homophonic and imitative, contrapuntal textures define specific textual phrases of this succinct setting; verse 1 (mm. 1-5), and “advocata…oculus” (mm. 29-35) in triple mensuration manifest homorhythmic style. A semibreve rest in all voices punctuates the conclusion of verse 6 and introduces the three acclamations of which verse 9, “O dulcis virgo Maria,” includes expressive harmonic progressions (g, E♭, c, G, F, d, A, D, mm. 73-6). Declamatory text setting prevails. Final g, b♭ signature.
