[1] Vita, dulcedo

Polyphonic ensemble SATTB

S-G2; A-C2; T I-C3; T II-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-g’’. Alternatim setting. The respective chant (App. 4) introduces textual phrases in breves and semibreves (e.g., “vita,” S, mm. 2-4 and “ad te,” S, mm. 25-7) or in the rhythmic character of other voices (e.g., “Et Jesum” A/B, mm. 61-4 and “O pia,” S/T, mm. 91-6); chant pervades the imitative texture. “Salve” motto, but with text “ad te su[spiramus]” appears in T I of 2.p. To represent the text “lacrimarum valle,” Victoria created a descending stepwise melody that encompasses an octave (S and T) or a fifth (all voices) that concludes pars 2. Declamatory style defines text setting. Final g (1.p., 2.p., 3.p.) d (4.p.)

[2] Ad te suspiramus

[3] Et Jesum

[4] O pia

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
