Two choirs. C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4, Bc. The Bc, a basso seguente, duplicates the lowest voice. “Salve” intonation (Chr. I, T). The first 6 verses of Salve regina verses are in falsobordone for two contrasting choirs (Chr. I, G-d’’; Chr. II, E-b♭’’ (indicated as ripieno in Bc), primarily as choral recitation. The three final acclamations (verses 7-9) for two choirs within the same range (G-d’’) consists of 19 mm. with brief antiphonal treatment of verses 7 and 8 and the initial statement of verse 9 (5 mm.). The stipulation, “Fora.”[1] in Bc begins with verse 7 and extends until the final 4 mm. Beginning with verse 9 (“O dulcis…”) the B of each choir borrows pitch content of verse 1 (“Salve regina…”) as a cantus firmus cast in semibreves (12 mm.); on the other hand, the upper three voices of both choirs are independent. The antiphon closes with a 4-measure coda (“Virgo Maria” marked “Rip.” in Bc). Final d, b-flats within score.

1. F. or Fora. (forastieri), indicated in Bc, refers to outside or ”foreign,” paid musicians (i.e., musicians not part of the musical establishment of the specific church or cathedral) who performed the solo passages (concertino). The terminology was common in Northern Italy in the late 16th century and onward. Frederick Hammond, “Performance in San Marco: A Picture and Two Puzzles,” Early Music, No. 2, 2012, p. 261.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
