Chant (App. 4) plays a prominent role throughout the antiphon. “Salve” (“vita”) motto makes 21 appearances (mm. 1-21 and 31-7), the “Et Jesum” motive 12 statements within a span of 11 measures; both motives are usually set apart in long note values and completely pervade the imitative texture. The symmetrical tripartite structure is enhanced through the reduction of voices (Q and B) for verse 5 ((2.p.). To conclude verse 6 and introduce the three acclamations (verses 7-9 Verdelot restates measures 41-53 of pars 3 with a rearrangement of voices (mm. 55-70). Related motives that accompany “misericordiae” (verse 1), “salve” (verse 2) and “O clemens” (verse 7) are derived from the respective chant references. The word “mater” is omitted from verse 1 but “semper” is inserted in verse 9. The setting combines syllabic and melismatic styles with limited concern for declamation. Final g, b♭ signature.
