Two contrasting choirs. Chr. I: C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Range, G-d’’. Chr. II: A-C3; T I-C4; T II-C4; B-F4. Range, F-a’. Chant (App. 4) introduces “salve” motto within an imitative texture: Chr I, C & T (breves, mm. 1-7); A & B (mm. 1-2 & 7-8, respectively). Salve regina verses and textual phrases are delineated through antiphonal techniques, contrasting texture, tonal areas (D, C, F, A and E) and repetition of musical sections. Salve regina verses are assigned to one choir (e.g., v. 3, “Ad te clamamus…”), divided between two choirs (e.g., v. 1, “salve regina,” Chr. I, “mater miserecordiae,” Chr. II, v. 6, “Et Jesum…tui,” Chr. I, “nobis…ostende,” Chr. II), or include contrasting tuttis. Tutti sections constitute 18 of 88 mm.: “vita dulcedo” (mm. 15-7); “in hac…valle” (mm. 32-5); “advocata” (mm. 39-42); and “O dulcis…Maria” (mm. 73-8 and repeated, mm. 83-8). A third of the antiphon (30 mm.) is devoted to verses 7-9, of which the acclamations of verses 7 & 8 (“O clemens” and “O pia”) lend themselves to antiphonal treatment: v. 7 (Chr. II, mm. 58-60; Chr. I, mm. 60-62); v. 8 (Chr. II, mm. 62-3, restated 4th higher by Chr. I, mm. 63-65); v. 7 two antiphonal statements of mm. 58-62 are exchanged) followed by v. 8 (mm. 69-73, antiphonal acclamations of mm. 62-65 are exchanged; the antiphon concludes with a tutti, “O dulcis…Maria, mm. 73-8” that is restated (mm. 83-88) and separated by a statement of v. 9 in Chr. II that includes the harmonic progression of the tutti “O dulcis virgo” followed by the musical material of “O pia” (mm. 62-3). Final D, accidentals (f♯, c♯, g♯, b♭) included in T 1277.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
