Polyphonic ensemble SATBXXXX

Two contrasting choirs. Chr. I: C-C1; Sx-C1; O-C2; T-C4. Range, c-d’’. C and Sx share same range (d’-d’’). Chr. II: A-C3; Q-C4; Sp-C4; B-F4. Range, F-a’. Chant quotation limited to “salve” motto (Chr. I, C, mm. 1-3 & Chr. II, A, mm. 4-5), and initial pitches of “Et Jesum” motive (B, mm. 63-4). Textual phrases characterized through texture, mensuration and antiphonal techniques. A rising stepwise motive of semiminums supports and complements the “salve” motto; in complete form (Chr. I, T, mm. 1-2 and Chr. II, B, mm. 3-4 & A, mm. 6-7) the motive outlines the accompanying harmonic palette (g, d, c). Beginning in measure 3, Chr. II states the initial full texture of Chr. I (mm. 1-3) an octave lower; with eight independent voices, the two choirs complete the introductory statement of “Salve regina.” Three additional textual segments receive emphasis with full-voice statements: “ad nos converte,” mm. 60-2; Et Jesum,” mm. 63-5; and “O dulcis virgo Maria,” mm. 91-100. Approximately two-thirds of the antiphon consists of overlapping antiphonal statements that involve alternation of textual/musical material at a related pitch (e.g., “ad te clamamus,” mm. 22-25) or antiphony that furthers the narrative of this expressive setting of Salve regina. Verse 9, “O dulcis virgo Maria,” in triple mensuration, constitutes one-fifth of the antiphon (mm. 81-101). At points of intersection of antiphon, or full-voice segments, a choir may be harmonically dependent upon the other choir. Final g, b♭ signature; e-flats are notated in S 1084.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
