[1] Vita dulcedo

Polyphonic ensemble STTBX

[D]-G2; Ct-C3; TI-C4; T II-F3; [B]-F4. Alternatim setting. Paraphrased chant (App. 4) introduces the 1.p. where it permeates the imitative, contrapuntal texture; on the other hand, chant as a cantus firmus in long note values defines the second and fourth partes. Whereas the chant melody tends to be more prominent in one voice (S in 1.p.; T I, 2.p.; S, 3.p.; and S, 4.p.), it is unequivocally present in other voices. Although the “Et Jesum” motive is quoted in TI and B (mm. 86-9), the S carries a melody (b♭, c, b♭, c, d, c, b♭) in breves and semibreves that is similar to initial pitches of verse 5, “Eya ergo.” (See same quotation in SR235). That the outer partes are in triple mensuration provides a measure of symmetry to the setting. Melismatic text setting characterizes the antiphon. Final g (1.p., 2.p., 3.p.) d (4.p.); b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
