Scores

Polyphonic ensemble SATBXX

C-C1; Q-C1; A-C3; T-C4; Sx-C4; B-F4. Entire range, E-e’’. C & Q share same range (d’-e’’). “Salve/vita” motto (C, mm. 1-3) introduces verses 1 and 2 supported by contrasting motives within an imitative texture, or surrounded by contrapuntal material (B, mm. 4-6 and T, mm. 6-8). To complement identical plainsong for verses 1 and 2 the entire texture is restated[1] (mm. 1-12 equals 13-24); T & Sx are exchanged for “vita….” Structural format of verses and textual phrases are clarified through contrast of texture and reduced number of voices. Almost half of the antiphon consists of segments composed for two to four voices. The conclusion of verse 4, “in hac lachrimarum valle” for four voices (C, A, Sx, B, mm. 37-40) and “Eia ergo advocata nostra” for three voices ( C, Q, T, mm. 40-5) contrast with the surrounding full-voice texture. Homophonic and homorhythmic texture characterizes two statements of “ad te suspiramus (mm. 29-33) with the following harmonic progressions: A, D, G, D, A and A, D, g, d, A; a semiminum rest in all voices precedes “suspiramus.” A full-voice texture defines the conclusion of verses 1 (mm. 8-12) and 2 (mm. 21-4), first half of verses 4, “ad te…flentes” (mm. 30-7), conclusion of verse 5, “illos…converte” (mm. 46-53), and verse 9 (mm. 68-73). Final d/D.

3. Salve regina settings by Arcadelt, SR021 Beausseron, SR037, Josquin, SR127, Misonne, SR172, Palestrina, SR195, Praetorius, SR216, Sermisy, SR236, and anonymous settings SR339, SR349, SR358, SR376, SR382, SR393, SR395 and SR476 follow the same procedure.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
