Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBBXX

Two equal choirs. S-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4; Bc-C3 and F4. Basso seguente. Range of each choir, F-e’’. “Salve” motto appears in S of Chr. I (mm. 1-6) and Chr. II (mm. 3-6), the only presence of chant in the antiphon. Textual phrases are principally defined through antiphonal treatment, contrasting texture and mensuration within a homophonic texture. Juxtaposed, but more often, overlapping phrases provide coherence with continual evolving antiphonal responses. Tutti sections support texts “ad te clamamus” (mm. 25-31), “eja ergo advocata nostra” (mm. 60-74), the first half of verse 5, the centerpiece of Salve regina,” “et Jesum fructus ventris tui” (mm. 105-22), and “O dulcis virgo Maria” (mm. 155-69). Set apart in triple mensuration, the text “ad nos converte” (mm. 95-104) concludes verse 5 and introduces verse 6. Expressive harmonic progressions (A, g, A, D, B, E, A) intensify the final acclamation “O dulcis virgo Maria.” Declamatory text setting prevails. Final d.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
