[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SSATB

C I-G2; C II-G2; A-C3; T-C3; B-F4. Within an imitative, contrapuntal texture chant (App. 4) motives most notably introduce verses 1 (“salve”), 2 (“vita”), 6 (“Et Jesum”) and specific words (e.g., “nobis,” mm. 49-52. In C II the text “vita” lacks the “salve” motto; however, the motto accompanies “et spes nostra,” mm. 12-3. Like Prenner”s four-voice setting (SR217), this motet is constructed of a series of overlapping phrases with the exception of verse 9 that is preceded by a semibreve rest in all voices. The word “mater” is omitted from verse 1 but is added in verse 9, “O dulcis virgo mater Maria.” Declamatory text setting in syllabic style prevails. Final g, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
