[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-g’’. Chant (App. 4), pitched on d’’ and cast in semibreves and minums, serves as cantus firmus (C), supported by three independent voices within a full voice texture. Salve regina verses are structurally distinguished through partes, or silence of a minum preceding verses 2 and 3. To complement the plainsong, the complete texture associated with “salve…miserecordiae” is restated for verse 2, “vita…salve.”[1] The word “mater” appears in verses 1 (“mater misericordiae”) and 9 (“dulcis mater Maria”). Notably, the phrase “unigenitum Filium tuum” (your only-begotten Son”) replaces “benedictum fructum ventris tui” in verse 6, “Et Jesum, benedictum…”. Final g, b♭ signature; e-flats included in printed source. A raised third occurs with each cadence on G.

1. Salve regina settings by Arcadelt, SR021, Beausseron, SR037, Josquin, SR127, Misonne, SR172, Palestrina, SR195, Reiner, SR225, Richafort, SR230, Sermisy, SR236, and anonymous settings SR339, SR349, SR358, SR376, SR382, SR393, SR395 and SR476 follow the same procedure.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
