Portinaro’s Salve regina may be one of the few seasonal antiphons composed for eight individual voices rather than the ubiquitous double choir. The tripartite structure consists of the textual centerpiece, verse 5, (49 mm) for four voices (C I & II, A, T) surrounded by 1.p. (100 mm.) and 3.p. (81 mm.). Textual phrases are differentialed through chant quotations, antiphonal treatment, contrasting voice groupings and contrapuntal material. Chant (App. 4), associated with specific words (e.g., “salve” motto appears in each voice, mm. 2-21, and “nobis, mm. 163-9) or sub-phrases (e.g., “et spes nostra, mm. 34-6; “in hac lacrimarum,” mm. 73-87; and “Et Jesum,” CI and B, mm 151-4) is distinguished by breves and semibreves. An imitative, contrapuntal texture with overlapping phrases prevails throughout the antiphon; voice groupings of primarily 4-6 voices dominate with full-voice sections devoted to “ad te clamamus” (mm. 39-44), “lacrimarum valle” (mm. 91-100), “Et Jesum benedictum fructum ventris tui” (mm. 150-60), and “O dulcis virgo Maria” (mm. 220-30); except for initial imitative section that introduces 2.p., a full-voice texture prevails. Syllabic style with occasional melismas defines the text setting of an antiphon that displays considerable text repetition and motivic development. Final d; b-flats included in P 5223 but editorial b-flats also required.
