[Tp]-C2; [A]-C3; [T]-C4. Alternatim setting. Ponce observes the Spanish tradition of allocating “nobis post hoc exsilium ostende,” the concluding text of verse 6, to chant; on the other hand, the three acclamations (“O clemens,” “O pia” and “O dulcis…”), usually set polyphonically, are considered separate entities wherein “O pia” remains in chant. Chant (App. 4) is limited to the motives associated with “vita” (2.p.), “Et Jesum” (3.p.) and four intial pitches of “O dulcis” (5.p.) where they permeate the imitative texture of the respective partes. The remaining new material reflects a treble-dominated texture. Periodic sequences (“gementes et flentes,” mm. 29-33; “fructum ventris,” mm. 52-4; and “O clemens,” mm. 65-7) and parallel thirds usually between the lower two voices characterize the setting (mm. 21-3, 47-9, 55-7 and 61-2. The word “et” is omitted in “et spes nostra” of verse 2 but “semper” is inserted in verse 9. Final d; 4.p. complements the chant with final a.
