Type

Motet

Scores

Polyphonic ensemble SATBX

C-G2; A-C2; Q-C3; T-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-f’’. A slightly paraphrased chant (App. 4) introduces most textual phrases within an imitative, contrapuntal texture with overlapping phrases. Except for imitative segments the antiphon is full voiced. The final three acclamations (verses 7-9) exhibit no influence of chant and are concisely constructed (mm. 73-9); the section is immediately repeated (mm. 79-86) with Q and T exchanged. A two-measure cadential pattern concludes the motet. The word “mater” is omitted in verse 1. Declamatory text setting prevails. Final g, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
