[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SSATB

[C I]-G2; [C II]-G2; [A]-C2; [T]-C3; [B]-C4. High clefs. Entire range, c-a’’. The C voices share the same range, g’-a’’. No evidence of chant. The tripartite structure complements the textual framework with verse 5, “Eia…converte,” the centerpiece, (2.p.) scored for 4 voices (C I, C II, A, B). A full-voice texture with autonomous voices prevails in each pars. Cast in semibreves and minums primarily in conjunct motion, the B functions not only as a harmonic support but also unifies the antiphon with repeated segments: e.g., a varied statement of mm. 1-9, (verses 1 & 2) appears with verse 3 & 4 (mm. 9-22); and initial material of 1.p. also opens 3.p. On the other hand, the upper voices in disjunct motion with rhythmic gestures primarily of semiminums and fusae markedly contrast with the B. A syllabic text setting characterizes the antiphon with considerable repetition of short textual phrases or specific words in the upper four voices: e.g., 4-5 statements of “salve regina” (mm. 1-3), and 2-7 repetitions of “O dulcis” (mm. 48-52). Final C.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
