[C]-G2; [A]-C2; [T]-C3; [B]-C4. High clefs. Entire range, c-g’’. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases are delineated through contrasts of texture, mensuration and cadential passages. Brief imitative segments introduce “vita” (mm. 8-9) and “ad te clamamus” (mm. 16-17). Triple mensuration and homorhythmic/homophonic texture define verses 5 and 6 (“Eia ergo…” and Et Jesum…” mm. 34-59). Identical musical material accompanies both “Salve” (mm. 1-3) and the “salve” concluding verse 2 (mm. 14-6) to frame verses 1 and 2. Except for brief melismas, a syllabic text setting prevails. Final G.

1. Although credited to Palestrina, this antiphon does not share characteristics
with the other Salve regina settings by the composer. Of the thirteen Marian antiphons assuredly attributed to Palestrina, all include chant quotations in varying degrees and one has a contrasting section in triple mensuration (AC099). In SR191 a vertical structure and varied harmonic palette differ from the prevailing Palestrina style. MGG II includes SR191 in the doubtful list of works but cites SR194 as the same antiphon. Haberl and Casamiri editions omit the antiphon. See Notes for AR082, AC099 and RC161, antiphons also included in VienNB Mus. 16709, most likely dubiously attributed to Palestrina.
