[1] Vita dulcedo

Polyphonic ensemble SSSTTB

[C I]-C1; [C II]-C1; [C III]-C1; [T I]-C3; [T II]-C3; [B]-F4. Alternatim setting. Free use of canon involving chant (App. 4) characterizes partes 1, 3, and 4. In 1.p. T II follows C I at the lower octave and distance of two breves until measure 25; for the remaining five measures T I continues in free counterpoint while C I is silent. To begin 3.p. the “Et Jesum” motive permeates the homophonic texture (mm. 129-39) followed by a canon between T I and C I at the upper octave and distance of two measures. Symmetry defines the second and fourth partes each opening with a three-voice texture of C I, C II, and C III followed by the three lower voices. In addition, a canon in augmentation distinguishes each pars: 2.p., C I/T I, mm. 34-40=40-51; 4.p., C I/T I, mm. 219-22=222-6. Symmetry extends to presence of triple mensuration in outer partes and duple mensuration for inner partes. A melismatic textual setting prevails. Final g (1.p., 2.p., 3.p.); final d, for 4.p. complements the chant where verse 8 concludes on the dominant; b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
