[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble STB

C-C1; T-C4; B-F4. 2.p. includes verses 2-4. Chant (App. 4) appears as cantus firmus in 1.p. (“salve,” mm. 1-5), 3.p. (T), 4.p. (B) and 6.p. (C) in long-note values including breves, longae and maximas, the latter at the beginning of 6.p., (“O pia,” mm. 217-25). On the other hand, chant pervades the imitative texture that introduces specific textual phrases (e.g., “vita,” mm. 15-7, “ad te clamamus,” mm. 22-5, “ad te suspiramus gementes et flentes,” mm. 30-8, and “O clemens,” mm. 198-201). Passages in parallel tenths, a mannerism of Obrecht, dominate 3.p., mm. 60-72. Each pars concludes with a section of rapid rhythmic gestures. Triple mensuration defines 1.p., 2.p. and the final sixteen measures of 7.p.; the remainder of the antiphon manifests duple mensuration. A melismatic text setting prevails. Final d; to complement plainsong final a (5.p., 6.p.).

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
