Scores

[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, B-g’’. No evidence of chant. Salve regina verses are defined through contrasting texture, melodic material, mensuration and inclusion of minum and semibreve rests between verses. Imitative entries introduce a contrapuntal texture for the second half of verse 5 (“misericordes…converte”) and verse 6 (“nobis…ostende”); a majority of the antiphon exhibits a homophonic texture with strong root progressions. Triple mensuration differentiates the first half of verse 5 (“Eia…nostra”). The words “mater” in verse 1 and “virgo” in verse 9 are omitted. Declamatory text setting prevails. Final g, b♭ signature.

[2] Eia ergo

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
