C-G2; A I-C2; A II-C2; T-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-g’’. Chant (App. 4), in semibreves (e.g., “salve” and “vita”), breves (e.g., “Et Jesum”), or frequently rhythmically assimilated, pervades the imitative texture at beginning of textual phrases. On the other hand, chant serves as cantus firmus in breves in C (“spes nostra salve,” mm. 25-37) and B (“nobis post hoc exsilium ostende,” mm. 161-9) supported by contrasting motivic material treated imitatively. Morales contrasts various voice groupings with full-voice scoring within a continuum of overlapping phrases in each pars. Declamatory text setting prevails. Final g, b♭ signature; e flats in MS sources, or editorially required.

Description

Grayson Wagstaff proposed the hypothesis that Josquin’s Salve regina (SR127) influenced Spanish composers to adopt the tripartite structure that allowed greater development of musical materials and expressive interpretation of the text than the typical alternatim setting. That Morales was acquainted with Josquin’s Salve regina is corroborated by Morales’s integration (mm. 26-9) of the ostinato motive (B, mm. 3-6) into his five-voice Salve regina. G.
